Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

At 1.00am on 27th May 1918 the battalion were at an assembly point near Chaudares in preparation for an attack the following day when they were hit by "a terrific barrage consisted of every calibre, trench mortars and gas shells". William was killed during the barrage.
