Circumstances Leading to Death - Extract from Battalion War Diary
Battlation ordered by Brigade to make a bombing attack up Gourook Road, Hill and Vigo Sts, Bydand Ave and Durham Lane with the object of retaking old Front Lines. Heavy artillery support in early evening. 1.30am the attack was made and was a complete success. The enemy retaliated with heavy and light artillery on our old Front Line and Communication Trenches and Maple Copse. We captured 28 unwounded prisoners and accounted for many of the enemy's casualties which were heavy. Casualties were two Lts killed. Other ranks not listed.| Personal & Family History |

Please note that the Warwickshire Roll of Honour book lists Private 1819 Francis Taylor of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as being the Francis named on the memorial, however that man has no connections to Arrow and lived in Birmingham.
