From his original service number, 1987 we can say that Arthur enlisted in the 7th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Territorial Force at sometime between 14th March 1913 and the 18th February 1914. He was mobilised at the outbreak of the war at Coventry. For more about Army Service Numbers click here.

Circumstances of Death

Arthur was captured on 20 Jul 1916 at Fleurbaix and taken to the Schneidemuhl Prisoner of War Camp in West Prussia. He died of Pleurisy on 21 Nov 1918 at the St. Elisabeth Catholic Hospital in Wattenscheid, Bochum. It is highly probable that his Pleurisy was caused by contracting Influenza (Spanish Flu). The foregoing was taken from a number of Red Cross Records including this one (click).

The war diary for the day that Arthur is recorded as being captured, 20 Jul 1916 states: La Gorgue - 20 VII [1916]- 2.30am: 2/7th relieved by 2/8th, proceeded to Laventie and thence by motor transport to La Gorgue. Baths and cleaning up.
