Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Bryan is listed as dying of wounds on 10 Oct 1917, presumably at either the 4th, 47th or 61st Casualty Clearing Stations which were close to Dozinghem Cemetery. The was diary for the 9th and 10th Oct 1917 is transcribed below. The 14th were a Pioneer/Engineer Battalion and Bryan was in C Coy of the battalion and it seems that Bryan died from works whilst incurred whilst on a working party party.

9th Oct – [W of Langemarck]: Orders received overnight for parties as follows to proceed to open up roads in forward area immediately after the advance. Zero hour was 5.20am.

1st Party 8.20am A Coy – 2 Off & 80 OR; C Coy 3 Off & 110 OR

2nd Party 1.20am [10th Oct] A Coy – 2 Off & 50 OR; B Coy 4 Off & 130 OR; C Coy 3 Off & 20 OR

Both parties worked in Wijdendrift-Langemarck Road U.21.a

D Coy at work as yesterday. END

10th Oct – [W of Langemarck]:

Working parties were sent out to carry out the same work as yesterday. END

Casualties for October 9th & 10th 1 Officer wounded, 5 other ranks killed and 24 other ranks wounded.
