Charles is listed by the War Grave Commissioned as being killed in action on 11th June 1918. He was initially reported as missing in action between the 27th May and 11th June 1918 and we believe that the War Graves Commission settled on the last day of the period as the day he was killed. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 27th May to 12th June are transcribed below. Of note is that on 1st June the 2nd Battalion was merged with the all other remaining men of the 8th Division into the 1st/8th and 2nd/8th Composite Battalions. 27th May 1918: Enemy attacked along whole Brigade Front. 2/Lieut W.H.C. Rooke and 65 Lewis Gunners (who had returned from Lewis Gun School) proceeded to 24th Brigade to take part in the Operations. Lieut & Adjutant A.A. Barrett MC and 60 O.R. proceeded to the Line and took up a position due South of Ventalay. 28th to 31st May 1918: Battalion took part in Operations between these dates. (28-31/05/1918) Estimated Casualties:- 23 Officers, 600 Other Ranks. 1st June 1918: The 8th Division was withdrawn from the Line on the 31st May 1918 to Nanteuil and bivouaced for the night 30/1st June in a small wood just S of the village. The bayonet strength of the Battalion at this date was about 7 Officers, 120 Other Ranks. Orders were received today for all these Officers and Men together with all other remaining troops of the 8th Division to report to 74th Infantry Brigade Head Quarters Nappe where they would form one Battalion called the 1/8th Composite Battalion of which Major H.P. Allaway assumed 2nd in Command. This Composite Battalion was moved to Bois de Courton in Reserve. 2nd June 1918: 1/8th Composite Battalion was moved up to the La Newville-Chawmwzy road where they were in Close Support. A 2/8th Composite Battalion was formed today from troops at Battalion Transport Lines such as Drummers and any reinforcements received. The 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment sent up 2 Officers, 50 Other Ranks. 3rd to 7th June 1918: 1/8th Composite Battalion remained in Support on the La Newville-Chawmwzy road. 2/8th Composite Battalion in reserve on the Bois de Courton. 8th June 1918: 1/8th and 2/8th Composite Battalions were moved up to hold the Line in the Bois de Eclisse 9th to 11th June 1918: Held Line as above in the Bois de Eclisse. 12th June 1918: On the night 11/12th, the 1/8th Composite Battalion was withdrawn and embussed today at a point about 1 1/2 miles N of Hawtvillers on the Nantwil-Hawtvillers road to proceed to Bannes. After debussing the 1/8th Composite Battalion was broken up and all Officers and Men joined their own Battalion. |
