William is listed as dying of wounds on 17 Jan 1916. The war diary for the period 15th to 17th Jan 1916 is transcribed below. Click here for information about the evacuation and treatment of the wounded. 15th January – Trenches – Sucerie nr Mailly-Maillet: Bright sunny day. Fleet of our aeroplanes went over about 10 a.m. Heavily fired at by enemy with shell, rifle and machine gun fire. Casualties (from appendix) 1 OR Killed & 1 OR Wounded. END 16th January – Trenches – Sucerie nr Mailly-Maillet: Quiet day. Very little hostile activity. Enemy snipers active at night. Captain G.W. Cox went to hospital (sick). Casualties (from appendix) None. END 17th January – Trenches – Sucerie nr Mailly-Maillet: Nothing of interest during day. Battalion relieved by R Irish Fus at night. Relief completed by 8pm. Fairly dark night. Battalion marched to Colincamp to go into billets. Casualties (from appendix) 5 OR Wounded. END |
