Circumstances of Death

Mark is listed as being killed in action on 30th September 1917. The 5th Battalion war diary entries for the period 29th September to 1st October 1917 are transcribed below.

Bristol Castle Line, Ypres - 29 Sep 1917: During night there was intermittent shelling of back area but the front line was quiet. B Coy suffered 3 casualties from a vane [aerial] bomb. Everybody hard at work at night wiring and improving trenches and fitting U frames.

Bristol Castle Line, Ypres - 30 Sep 1917: From 4.15 to 7am heavy strafe between support and reserve lines causing C Coy 8 casualties one of who was CSM Williams.

The weather was misty and the Bosche seemed to be afraid of an attack, everything goes to show he is very windy. Rest of day quiet.

Bristol Castle Line, Ypres - 01 Oct 1917: A Coy rather troubled by minnies in the early morning. Capt Mullis’s HQ being blown in also from stand to till 8am. Otherwise the day was quiet, 2/Lt Fritz who is acting as Intelligence Officer tried to capture a Hun along the bank of the Douve but was just too late.
