Circumstances of Death

Arnold is listed as being killed in action on 5th July 1916. The 2nd/7th Battalion war diary entries for the period 4th to 7th July are transcribed below.

Neuve Chapelle - 4 Jul 1916: A quiet 24 hours on both sides. Rain. Trenches in a mess from mud and water.

Neuve Chapelle - 5 Jul 1916: A quiet day again. Only artillery registration of gaps in enemy’s wire & the normal firing on those gaps at 10pm to 10.15pm.

10.20pm: Enemy retaliated with salvoes of whiz-bangs & B Coy commander [Arnold] was badly hit by one of these and died before being moved 100 yards. 3 OR’s wounded, two badly.

Neuve Chapelle - 6 Jul 1916: Another quiet day, normal routine. Preparations for a Smoke Bomb attack in hand. No wind up to midnight.

Neuve Chapelle - 7 Jul 1916: Burial of Capt Browett at Pont du Hem. Only artillery registration at intervals during the day. Stood by for another attack at night but no wind. 2nd Lt Buccanhan sent down to hospital with shell shock W.
