According to his partly ripped service record partly on 28 Jan 1918 Bertie was transferred from the 22nd Field Ambulance to the 24th Casualty Clearing Station during what is described as the 4th day of his illness. His symptoms were listed as "Pyrexia, pain in the abdomen and legs, cough, dyspnoea, rus? sputum, dullness at left base". Berties was diagnosed as suffering from Lobar Pneumonia which spread from his left lung to his right lung and he died 9 days later on 5 Feb 1918. A note in his service record says Bertie "died of pneumonia due to exposure whilst on Military Service". His service record makes it clear that Bertie had suffered badly from illnesses having been admitted to to medical units on 7 previous occassions for, among other things, tonsillitis and measles and had only been discharged from a hospital a month before his admission to the Field Ambulance. |
