Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion had taken up and dug into positions in Nieppe Forest in the expectation of a German attack which duly arrived about 11am on 13th April when they attacked Les Lauriers. The attack was repulsed by the battalion. The following day they carried out an attack on an enemy position in which ended in failure and William would have been killed during this action.
