George is listed as having died of wounds on 26 Mar 1916, this date conflicts with the CWGC's own Graves Registration Report and newspaper reports which state he died on 23 Mar 1916. Therefore we have transcribed the battalion war diary entries for the period 22nd to 26th March 1916 (inclu) below. War Diary 22 Mar 1916Trenches Chapigny 22.3.16: C.O. visited trenches and posts 9.30am till 1pm. Gen. Twyford visited Bn. Hd Qrs in the morning. Casualties 1 killed Lieut W.R. Brindley and 5 men went on leave War Diary 23 Mar 1916Trenches Chapigny 23.3.16: 6.40am Germans sprung a mine just to the right of our subsection. Very quiet day. Enemy only putting 3 shells near Grante Post during the day. C.O. visted Dreadnought-Erith and A Coy at Stand To. M.O. and Adjutant visited trenches 2.0pm / 4.0pm. C.O. visited trenches 3.0pm / 6.0pm. Casualties 1 wounded. 11 men went on leave War Diary 24 Mar 1916Trenches Chapigny 24.3.16: Very quiet all day. C.O. visited trenches 10.30an and 5.0pm. Adjutant visited trenches 10.0pm. Casualties. 2 wounded (1 accidental) 2nd Lt E.H. Rogers and 11 men went on leave War Diary 25 Mar 1916Trenches Chapigny 25.3.16: Staff Captail and Brigade Major visited trenches with the C.O. at 10.30am. C.O. again visited trenches at 5.30pm. Enemy shell front line trenches and Tilleloy (N) Post very heavily. 12 men went on leave Casualities. 2nd Lt N.G. Carty killed; 4 killed; 6 wounded War Diary 26 Mar 1916Trenches Chapigny 26.3.16: Enemy shelled centre Company very heavily. Did considerable damage to the parapet and blocked Winchester Trench in several places. Enemy shelled Bn HQ in the afternoon. C.O. went round trenches in morning and afternoon. Gen. Twyford visited Bn. Hd Qrs in the morning. Relieved by 10th Worc R. Relief complete 9.0pm. Battalion returned to billets towards Pont du Hem in Bde Reserve. C Coy in the posts. Casualties 2nd Lt E.C. Oakley and 3 men wounded Capt A.N Henderson returned from leave. 11 men went on leave Newspaper ObituaryStratford Herald - Friday, April 14, 1916 - Shipston-on-Stour ANTOHER SHIPSTON MAN KILLED. - Last week Mr. E. Sturch of Horn Lane, received an official notification that his son, Private Edward Sturch, 10th Batt. Royal Warwickshire Regiment, died on March 23rd from wounds received in action. The deceased who was aged about twenty years, joined the Colours about a year ago, and he was a smart young soldier. Great sympathy is felt for the relavtives. This is the tenth Shipstonian who had made the supreme sacrifice since the outbreak of war. |
