Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
George was killed in action on 2 Oct 1917 when the battalion took over a support trench at Stirling Castle which was directly east of Zillebeke. The war diary states that after they had taken over the trench enemy artillery fire began falling across the line one of which caused struck a train full of shells causing a large fire. Later in the day further shell fire fell on the battalion which killed on other rank, George, wounded 10 including the Rev Father Evans, 1 other man was reported as missing.
