Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as being killed in action on 9th August 1917. The 9th Battalion war diary entries for period 8th to 10th August are transcribed below.

Trenches near Beaurains – 8 Aug 1917:Enemy put down a barrage at 11am in reply to bombardment by our Stokes Mortars. Otherwise quiet.

Trenches near Beaurains - 9 Aug 1917: 7.15am -Our artillery started a bombardment lasting 13½ hours preparatory to the raid being carried out by 35th & 37th Brigades in conjunction with Divisions on our left and right. Line was cleared except for isolated posts. Our heavies fired short all day & obliterated our front line.

7.45pm: Zero hour. Front line remained?.  Raid very successful, over 80 prisoners being taken.

Trenches near Beaurains - 10 Aug 1917: All available men at night busy & reclaiming our front line assisted by parties from 11th Middlesex Regt. Coys in support & reserve relieved two front line Coys.
