Circumstances of Death

William is listed as dying of wounds at one of the 5 Casualty Clearing Stations (1st/1st South Midland, 21st, 34th, 45th and Lucknow, Section "B") set up at at Daours in preparation for handling the expected casualties for the forthcoming Battle of the Somme.

We have not been able to specifically identify the location of William's Trench Mortar Battery nor the original date on which he was wounded. 17th Division itself was in the area of Dernacourt and Longeuval.
