Circumstances of Death

Edward is listed as being killed in action on 13th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme at Bernafay Wood. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the 12th and 13th September are transcribed below. Happy Valley - 12 Sep 1916: Battalion paraded at 2.15pm to move forward. Packs and surplus kits were left behind. After a long halt at Carnoy till darkness set in, relieved 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards. Bernafay Woods - 13 Sep 1916: L, F & C Coy on fatigue in afternoon making battle HQ's for the Division. Very heavy cannonading on the front. Casualties - Killed 2nd Lt E Holland and 13 OR's; wounded 2nd Lt R.J. Champion (remained at duty) and 24 OR's. |
