Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 27th September 1915 by a bursting shell. The 3rd Battalion war diary entries for the 25th to 29th September 1915 are transcribed below but do not give much information. The Battalion took part in a diversionary attack designed to help the main attack on Loos which was abandoned as a failure on 28th September.

Canal Bank S of Ypres - 25th Sep 1915: In reserve along Canal Bank S of Ypres as Bn Reserve to 7th Infantry Brigade during operations against the German lines by 5th Corps. Relieved 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders in Trenches at Hooge. Relief completed by 11.15pm.

Wounded 2/Lieut E.L. Bishop, 1 R&F [Rank and File] killed

Trenches at Hooge 26th Sep 1915: In Trenches at Hooge. 2 R & F killed & 8 wounded

Trenches at Hooge 27th Sep 1915: Relieved by 1st Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, relief completed by 11.15pm. Marched to Billets at Busseboom. 3 R&F killed & 7 wounded.
