Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The war diary states that the Battalion was in the trenches in Gavrelle when it followed the Gavrelle-Fresnes road and attacked enemy positions NE of Gavrelle with the intention of capturing the Gavrelle windmill. The ojective was achieved at great cost after slow or stalled attacks by other regiments left both of the battalions flanks open and the enemy were able to attack with machine gun and rifle fire. Even with the losses they held the position despite "violent counterattacks". The casualties were 26 killed, 72 wounded and 395 missing which was the single biggest loss the battatlions history.
