Circumstances of Death

Alfred is listed as being killed in action on 21 Mar 1918. Although he is shown as being in the 2nd/5th North Staffs that battalion was absorbed by the 1st/5th North Staffs on 6 Feb 1918 (Source The Long Long Trail) and they became the 5th Battalion. The 5th Battalion war diary entries for the 21st and 22nd March are transcribed below.

Bullecourt Sector 21 March 1918:The Battalion holding the line in the Brigade left sector. After a heavy bombardment the enemy attacked about 9am which resulting in the loss of 22 Officers and 539 Other Ranks, including the Battalion HQ and staff. During the afternoon the remainder of the Battalion was move by route march to Courcelles-le-Comte. About 11pm the battalion is moved to Douchy-les-Ayette.
