Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
During the opening weeks of 1915 no operations of any importance took place, and all that the Regiment did was to take its turn in the trenches in different parts—mostly on the extreme right of the British portion of the line. On the 25th of January the Germans commenced to shell Bethune, and then pressed forward with some success against the La Bassee position and the village of Givenchy. Severe fighting lasted for several days, but in the end the 1st Division recovered practically all the lost ground. Read more on Lightbobs.com
The war diary shows that the Battalion had relieved the Glasgow Highlanders in the trenches at La Plantin on the day Arthur was killed.
