Circumstances of Death

Maurice is listed as dying of wounds received in action on the 20th January 1917 in one of the seven General Hospitals stationed in Amara. The 5th [not 8th per CWGC] Battalion war diary reveals that Maurice was wounded on the 11th January and the war diary entries for the 11th and 21st are transcribed below.

Q.3 Position - 11 Jan 1917: At Q.3 until 2p.m when battalion marched back to S.9. Left S.9 at 7p.m and marched to take over line held by South Lancs Regt on East bank of HAI immediately East of Listed Ruin arriving at 9p.m. Here we dug an advanced trench connected by a communication trench to Lunnette L10. A Coy acted as covering party. 2 Officers wounded (2/Lt D.B Hutchinson and 2/Lt M.G Warland) O.R. Killed 5 wounded 18.

Mesopotamia, Trenches - 21 Jan 1917: Quiet day. Work continued on forward line of Swindon St., on dumps and Aid Post. Our artillery active. 2/Lt M.G. Warland reported Died of Wounds. Casualties O.R’s wounded 4.
