Oscar is listed in two military records as having died of wounds incurred in action on 22 Aug 1917. It appears from the war diary that he was the one "other rank" wounded on the 21 Aug 1917 during training at Area 1 at Brandhoek, Ypres. The battalion war diaries for 21st & 22nd are transcribed below. B Camp - Brandhoek - No 1 Area - 1917-Aug-21: 3am. 1 officer and 50 reserve S.B's [Stretcher Bearers] to Main Corps Dressing Station, Wieltje Mines Dugouts. 15 officers and 10 Platoon Sgts proceeded to demonstration in attacking Strong Points at place 10 miles NW of St. Omer. 2 Coys fired on 25 yard range and 3 Coys bathed at Corps Baths, Poperinghe. All Company's taken over model constructed under Battn arrangements of German Lines - objectives in next attack. Weather Fine, some shelling in neighbourhood Casualties 1 OR wounded 5.30pm C.O. attended Bde Conference. END B Camp - Brandhoek - No 1 Area - 1917-Aug-22: Companuy training. 6am 1 officer and Emergency S.B's to Corps Walking Wound Station. 2 Lt Whiteley and 2 OR to Anti Aircraft L.G. [Lewis Gun] Course at 25 Squadron RFC. Col held conference of Coy Commanders. All Coys went over model of German Lines. END |
