Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
At 2am on the day James was killed the Germans opened up a heavy barrage on the Brigades positions then attacked with infantry. It appears that a number of artillery pieces were overrun and captured during the attack and the Brigade HQ was forced to retire. James was killed at some stage during this action.
