A service record reveals that on 11 Sep 1916 Edward was discharged from the 4th Stationary Hospital, St. Omer. He is then recorded as being killed in action 3 days later on 14 Sep 1916. The 258th Tunnelling Company war diary entries for the 13th to 15th September are transcribed below. 13 Sep 1916 - In the Field (near Cameron Alley): Struck gas in No 3 deep main & a explosion occured. 1 N.C.O. badly gassed but got out by ? men in time. 14 Sep 1916 - In the Field: No 3 Deep Main very badly gassed, No 23 Mine also gassed. 15 Sep 1916 - In the Field: Saw controller of mines has put Lt. Smart at our disposal to Tamp No 3. deep main R. |
