Joseph is listed as being killed in action on 4th November 1918. The 1st/8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 3rd to 5th November 1918 are transcribed below. Le Faux – 03 Nov 1918: Owing to the rainy weather the forward Coys were relieved. A Coy taking over the right and B Coy the left. The day was uneventful. Landrecies – 04 Nov 1918: At 06.15 hours the Battalion attacked and after a very severe fight secured its objective which was the line of the River Sambre at Landrecies establishing a bridge head there at H.17.c.6.3. Orders received from Brigade at 15.40hrs which ordered the Battalion to concentrate in the area G.24.a and the Battalion moved in accordance with these orders. Maroilles – 05 Nov 1918: The Battalion received orders to continue the advance and to protect the right flank of the 74th Infantry Brigade which was attacking the line if the Petit Helpe River. The Battalion moved along the Landrecies-Maroilles road in the order A.B.C.D. Coys and advanced without opposition until the leading Company came under fire from the outskirts of Maroilles. At 09.15hours the Division operating on our right (which had been held up by the fire of isolated machine guns) came up into the line with the 74th Infantry Brigade and this relieved the battalion of its duty as flank guard. Companies were billeted in houses along the Landrecies-Maroilles road and rested there the day. |
