There are two casualty/sick list records which show that on 5 Sep 1915 Joseph was admitted to the 22nd General Hospital at Camiers with a Gun shot wound / Compound Fracture of Lower Jaw.The records can be found below - click to enlarge.
It is not known when he left the 22nd General hospital but on 31 January 1916 Joseph committed suicide and was buried in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery. No newspaper reports have been found and the Battalion war diary makes no mention of any casualty event. The battalion were at rest in Camp C at Poperinghe at that time.
