Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Frederick is listed as dying of wounds received in action on 22 Mar 1918. The following is a precis of the war diary for the period 21st to 23rd March. Below that is a transcription of the war diary for 22 Mar 1918.

The previous day (21st March) the battalion had moved from Sorel Wood to Saulcourt.

On the 22nd March 1918 (the 2nd day of the the German Spring Offensive) Frederick and his battalion were in the front lines at Saulcourt (blue pin) when the enemy attacked in force. The first attack in the morning was replused but a further attack in the afternoon forced a retirement across the front to Tincourt Wood (red pin). Frederick was killed (died of his wounds) during one of these attacks and his remains were never recovered for burial.

The following day (23rd March) they moved, under heavy attack, from Tincourt Wood to Aizecourt (green pin).

Saulcourt 22-3-18:

At dawn the enemy attacks in force. About noon orders are received to place C Company (acting Captain A.W. Harvey) and D company (Lieut G.B. Barber) in reserve to 16th Rifle Brigade and A Company (Lieut M.D. Leppan) and B Company (2nd Lieut T.G. Eastman) in reserve to 16th Sherwood Foresters. Each extend their left and right flanks respectively to take over that portion of the line previously held by the battalion. Heavy attacks I'll deliver during the afternoon on the 16th brigade and see and D companies of this battalion suffer heavy casualties. A/Capt A.W. Harvey he's wounded and has to be left behind when the company is withdrawn. 2/Lieut F.C. Pepler wounded in this action. A & B Companies are withdrawn to the Green Line at Tincourt Wood about 5:00pm and cover the withdrawal of the remainder of the brigade. C & D Companies arrive at 7:00pm and uh placed in close support. No further attack is delivered by the enemy. Enemy patrols are seen and fired on during night. END
