Please Note:

Harry had enlisted in his own name in the Rifle Brigade on 6 Apr 1914, however his true age was quickly realised and he was discharged on 12 May 1914 aged 15

Harry then enlisted in Oct or Nov 1914 using his brothers name, Joseph Arthur Tilsley, and he was still 15 years old when he did so. However again it is believed that
it was realised that he was too young and he did not enter France until at least 1 Jan 1916 and most likely later when he turned 18 in Jan - Mar 1917.

Circumstances of Death

Harry is listed as being killed in action on 28 Aug 1918. The 1st/5th Battalion war diary entries for the 27th to 29th August 198 are transcribed below.

Harbonniers – 1918 – Tues – 27 Aug: Showery day & situation very quiet in front line. The Commanding Officer took over command of the Battalion in the afternoon.

Harbonniers – 1918 – Wed – 28 Aug: Owing to retreat of Germans in front the Battalion moved forward from its position in  Harbonniers area without getting into touch with the enemy, it proceeded via Framerville and Soyecourt to a position 2000 yards east of Deniecourt. The transport also moved forward and halter for the night in Soyecourt. During the day Capt J. Shirley was wounded. Capt A.G. McNaughten rejoined the Battalion from an instruction course in Aldershot.

Soyecourt – 1918 – Thurs – 29 Aug: In the morning pursuit was continued and the Battalion advanced to a position south of the main road in Villers Carbonnel. A few casualties were suffered through enemy shellings.

Circumstances of Death

Leonard was taken prisoner on 21 March 1918 at St. Quinten, Belgium on the first day of the German Spring Offensive having been wounded by a shot fracture of the right thigh. His Red Cross record is held in the name Horman Parkin. According to the record on Find My Past he was originally kept at Von Der Front PoW Camp before being moved to Wittenburg PoW Camp. Leonard survived the war and was released and was then discharged from the Army on 4th July 1919 because of the wounds he received near St. Julien. Leonard had spent some months in a Military Hospital in Scotland and the Warneford Hospital in Leamington.

On 13th August 1920 Leonard died at home of Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Exhaustion [Death Cert].

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 18th August 1916. The 1st/5th Battalion war diary entries for the period 16th to 19th August are transcribed below.

Bouzincourt – 16.8.1916: Relieved the 6th Glosters as in OO 56 and took over as follows:
A-B Coys in trenches Orvillers Village
HQ & C-D Coys in trenches Orvillers Posts

Orvillers Post – 17.8.1916: No diary entry made

Orvillers Post – 18.8.1916: The battalion attacked as in 143 Bde OO No 81. Orders issued to O.C. Coys verbally. The attack was successful. A coy took first objective, B Coy plus two platoons of C Coy took the second – D coy joined the garrison of the trench 28-37and C Coy less two platoons joined a carrying party.

The jumping off place was 28-88, ladders were placed on the right of the 17th, 18th and dumps? joined at 28 and 88. Battn HQ’s were near Post 05 and advanced HQ Point 67.

At night a Coy of the 1/8 R War R took over from 28-37 and C & D Coys went forward to assist A & B Coys.

Orvillers – 19.8.1916: Line readjusted at daylight as shown in Appendix III. Patrols sent forward and in Appx IV – Pt 79 not captured. Line readjusted at night as in 143 Bde II 82 (Battn OO 57).

Circumstances of Death

Sidney is listed as being killed in action on Christmas Day 1914 in the front lines near Le Touret. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 24th to 26th December 1914 are transcribed below and indicate that Sidney was killed by a sniper.

E of Le Touret - 24 Dec 1914: – Trenches improved, another communication trench was started, Germans threw a few bombs and snipers caused a few casualties.

E of Le Touret - 25 Dec 1914: Very cold and freezing hard, snipers caused a few casualties, otherwise quiet. Defence arranged, 2 Coys in trenches, 1 Coy in support and 1 Coy in billets. Relief taking place nightly.

E of Le Touret - 26 Dec 1914: Quiet on front. Col Pereira ricked his back and had to go to the Field Ambulance for a few days. Major P.A. MacGregor commanded Battalion
