Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

All WW1 military records list his name as Charles James, however all birth, census and a 1910 Army Service record show that his names was actually Clifford James Johnson, this is supported by his pension cards where his mother is named Maria - the same name as on his bapitsm and census records.

Charles/Clifford died of an unstated disease at the 16th Casualty Clearing Station, Filayish, Iraq. More men were killed by disease in Mesopotamia than by enemy actions.

Circumstances of Death

James is listed as being killed in action on 8 Jul 1915. The battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below:-

8th July 1915. Trenches - Canal Bank: D Coy heavily shelled in morning. 11th Bde heavily engaged all day fighting mostly with hand grenades. 1 Platoon B Coy sent up to reinforce D Coy whose bombers were sent up to front line trenches.

9.30pm: B Coy relieved D Coy in support, A Coy were put in reserve at Hulls Farm to 11th Bde. C & D Coys were relieved by 147th Brigade & went into bivouac at Elverdinghe Chateau. Major Forster and Major Bannerman rejoined at 2am being relieved by Colonel Palk, Hampshire Regt.

Casualties: 2 Lieut Lewis (4th S. Staffs) & 2nd Lieut Johnson killed. Other ranks 8 killed, 54 wounded. 2nd Lieut J.H. Bennett wounded (shell shock). END

  • We have not yet been able to find James's birth record. The 1901 & 1911 census returns show it as 1892 at Brinklow and his Soldiers
    Who Died in the Great War record states he was born in Brinklow.
  • The 1891 census shows that his parents were living in Brinklow and that his father Charles was born there. By 1901 they were all
    living in Coventry.
  • James is not to be confused with Private 1367 James Ernest Watkins who was born in Brinklow in 1890

Circumstances of Death

Harry was admitted to Freeman Thomas Hospital in Bombay, India during March 1917 with BeriBeri. He was then taken onboard the Hospital Ship HMHS Marania and died on 23 Apr 1917 and was buried at sea.

From his service number, 2463, we believe that John enlisted between 7 Jan 1913 when #2253 was issued and 9 Jun 1914 when #2539 was issued.

Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 4 Feb 1915. The 1st Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below.

4th February - St Yves: Artillery duels took place during most of the day. Unusual activity of aircraft both British and German. About 4.15pm hostile light guns shelled Boreen heavily. 1 killed, 4 wounded.

Major Lancaster returned from leave. Lieut Black went on leave. END

Circumstances of Death

John is listed as dying of wounds on 11 Feb 1915 and that would have been at the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station, Bethune which used Bethune Town cemetery for its burials. His De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour entry states that he wounded at Cuinchy on the same day that he died. This is confirmed by a very brief report in the Rugby Advertiser on February 27th 1915 from which the above picture is taken. The also brief 3rd Battalion war diary for 11 Feb 1915 is transcribed below.

Cuinchy - Feb 11. 1915: Relieved by 2 C.G. in evening and marched to billets at Bethune. Casualties 5 W [wounded]. End

Dunchurch

This is portrait [see above] of the eldest son of Mr. W and Mrs. Richardson, The Banks Dunchurch. Pte John Richardson of the Coldstream Guards volunteered for the front at the outbreak of the war and landed in France on November 12th. He died from wounds received in action on February 11th.

He was one of the smartest of the young men that went from Dunchurch. Up to the present, in addition to Pte. Richardson the following Dunchurch men have been killed:- Lance-Corpl E. Parker, Lance-Corpl White; Pte R Norman and Gunner Harry Pearce (on the Bulwark).
