Circumstances of Death

Lewis is listed as being killed in action on 4th October 1917 whilst attached to the 8th Machine Gun Company. The 8th Company war diary entry for 4th Oct is transcribed below. It reveals that his position was hit be shell fire, killing him and 5 other men.

Cateau area - 4th Oct 1917: 3 Guns on SOS line. Enemy barrage opened at 5.30am. Two gun positions blown in. Casualties 6 OR’s killed, 4 OR’s wounded.

6am: Attack by 2nd Australian Division

8am: M.G. Barrage by Guns in our SOS Group commenced. Ammunition expended 21,000 rounds

5.30pm: SOS Signal observed, all guns opened fire. Amm expended 6,500 rounds

8pm: SOS Signal observed, all guns opened up. Amm expended 5,500 rounds
