Circumstances of Death

Harry was originally reported missing in action on 24 Mar 1918 and his death was later accepted as having been on that date. It took some time for his death to be officially confirmed and in the meantime Harry's father made at least two requests for information to the Red Cross Prisoner of War department in August and October 1918. 

The war diary for the 24th March 1918 is transcribed below:

Clery - 24/3/1918: Line heavily attacked at 9.0am, orders received for withdrawal received 10am. Enemy having punctured the line further north. Transport moved 5am to Suzanne arriving 8.30am. Mr Guthrie & party arrived 3.30pm. Remainder of 3 Coys now 21 Div RE Coy moved off at 5pm for Bray arriving a L.13.cx at 11.0pm. Camped alongside road. END

No mention is made of casualties.
