Frank is listed as being killed in action on 2nd June 1918. The 74th Brigade war diary entry for the period 1st to 16th June contains no information about Frank's death or any events likely to have caused it. The following obituary was carried by the Stratford Herald. Stratford Herald - Friday 14th June 1918 Gunner Frank Willoughby of the Royal Field Artillery has “gone west”, being killed instantaneously with two other signallers on the 2nd inst., and many in Stratford will mourn his loss for he was a popular man with good business capabilities and naturally gained the respect of those with whom he was brought into contact. He was for a time the manager at Fletcher’s meat establishment in this town and joined up in March 1917 going to France in August of the same year. Before that, however, he performed useful war work giving his spare time willingly in the harvesting operations in 1916. To use the words of his sergeant, Willoughby was “one of the most happy, contented and reliable of men” and much sympathy will go out to the widow. He was 32 years of age when he received the call to the higher tribunal. |
