Circumstances of Death
Harry is listed as being killed in action on 16th November 1916 during the latter stages of the Battle of the Somme. The very brief 6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 15th to 17th November are transcribed below. Sarton - 15.11.1916: Attacked Munich Trench with part of 112th Brigade. 4 Officers killed. Sarton - 16.11.1916: Entrenched near Waggon Road. Sarton - 17.11.1916: Marched from Waggon Road to Mailly-Maillet arriving at 6.30am. Stratford Herald - Friday 10th August 1917 Mr. and Mrs. White of Ely Street have been notified by the Warley Infantry Record Office that as no further news has been received of their son who was posted as missing after an engagement in France on November 11th last it has concluded that he is dead. Sergeant White was at one time the manager of the Stratford branch of the Empire Meat Company and subsequently transferred to the Tring branch. He joined the Bedfordshire Regiment about two and a half years ago. Towards the end of 1915 he was wounded and brought to Manchester where he remained for six months under medical treatment. On his discharge from hospital he spent a few days at home and then went to Rochester to give musketry instruction. He returned to the front nearly a year ago. |
