Circumstances of Death
Sidney is listed as dying from heat stroke on 17th July 1917. Regimental history shows that after the Battle of Ramadi, which took place between 8th & 13th July, 1917 very bad (hot) weather conditions set in causing numberous deaths from heat stroke & a lack of water. The 9th Battalion War diary entries for the period 16th to 18th July are transcribed below as well as an obituary from the Stratford Herald. al Sindiyeh – 16.7.1917: Situation unchanged. Digging party returned by 7am. Brigade asked return of ? of New Army recommended for temporary I.A. Commissions. Nil submitted. 40th Brigade concert party visited Brigade Casualties Other Ranks 4 sick al Sindiyeh – 17.7.1917: Situation unchanged. Battalion Grenade course of 1 NCO and 24 men commenced. Casualties: Other Ranks 10 sick al Sindiyeh – 18.7.1917: Situation unchanged. Casualties: Other Ranks 3 sick Stratford Herald - Friday 27th July 1917 Mrs. C. Simpson of 5 Percy Street, Stratford on Avon had been notified of the death of her son Sidney from heatstroke in Mesopotamia on July 17th. Private S. Simpson, who was formerly employed by Messrs. Archer & Son, joined the colours on 14th May 1915 and was attached to the 9th Royal Warwickshire Regiment and notification was accompanied by messages of sympathy by the King and Queen and many friends in Stratford who will mourn the loss of this gallant son. |
