Circumstances of Death

Alfred is listed as being killed in action, most likely by a sniper, on 4th November 1914. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 2nd to 4th November 1914 are transcribed below.

La Boutillerie Fromelles – Nov 3rd 1914: A patrol from A Coy surprised the enemy digging and managed to account for a few getting safely back themselves. Trenches were heavily shelled during the day. Casualties: Rank & File 1 killed 3 wounded.

La Boutillerie Fromelles – Nov 4th 1914: Quiet night. More sniping than usual during the day. Casualties Capt. R A Phillips, Lt Shelton wounded. R & F 4 killed 3 wounded.

Reinforcements – Lt Raffles and 37 men arrived

La Boutillerie Fromelles – Nov 5th 1914: Moderately quiet except for rather heavy shelling in the morning. Casualties nil.
