Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 27th August 1917. The 2nd/7th Battalion War Diary entries for the 26th, 27th & 28th are transcribed below and indicate that George was the only casualty on the day due to shellfire.

In the field - 26th: Battalion proceeded by march route to take over from 2/8 Worcester Regt in support to 183rd Brigade. From 6pm 26th inst Bn came under orders of G.O.C. 183rd Inf Bde. Relief completed 11.25pm without casualties.

In the field - 27th: Quiet night. Enemy artillery active during the afternoon. One casualty

In the field - 28th: Intermittent artillery duel during the night & early morning. Battalion moved back to Canal Bank Wieltje arriving at 4pm. Casualties 2 killed, 6 wounded.
