Previous Service

We know that William originally enlisted in 1904 but by 1911 he was back living at home in Medbourne but his service record does not record when he left the army.
However he must have mobilised on or before 5 Aug 1914 as he landed in France with the 1st Battalion, Leicestershire on 9 Sep 1914.

Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 27 Sep 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The 7th Battalion war diary entries for overnight 26/27th and the day of the 27th are transcribed below and from them it appears that William was one of 48 casualties from shell fire on their positions.

Guedecourt - 26/9/16: On the night of the 26/27th, the 6th Battalion having occupied the village of Guedecourt, the two Coys in Switch trench moved forward to Bull Road trench & Pioneer Trench. Battn HQ were in Bull Road Trench.

Guedecourt - 27/9/16: Battalion remained in same position. Nothing of importance occurred during this period. 48 casualties were sustained through shell fire.
