Walter is listed as dying of wounds at the 61st Casualty Clearing Station at Dozinghem. The 9th Battalion war diary entries for the 17th & 18th August 1917 are transcribed below. Ouderdom - 17.8.17: Bussed from Ouderdom to field 2 kilometres past Dickiebusch, opposite Cafe Belge. Bn encamped till evening. Bn less details under Major Hon. N.G. Bligh proceeded to trenches and relieved remnants of the 56th Division on Westhoek Ridge. Relief complete at 6.30am, 18th. Westhoek Ridge - 18.8.1817: Heavy enemy shelling omthe Battation front all day, increasing in intensity during the night, attack expected but did not materialise. Battn HQ on Menin Road blown in in one place. Casualties OR 9. Battalion occupied Advanced posts in front of Westhoek Ridge. END |
