Circumstances of Death

Stephen is listed as being killed in action of 18 Sep 1918. The 17th Field Ambulance war diary for that day is transcribed below.

In the Field - 17/9/18: Unit moved to Villeveque A.D.S. [Advanced Dressing Station] established at 62c.11.c.1.8 under Major Ferman, Lt. Chemness & Capt Tudhope in charge of bearers. Division reconnoitered at S.8.a but failed to get in touch with R.M.O.’s.

Villeveque - 18/9/18: Lt. Chemness & Capt Tudhope with bearer division left A.D.S at 5am. Lt Chemness with 20 bearers got in touch with 2nd Foresters. Capt Tudhope with 20 bearers got in touch with M.O. 1 Leicestershire and with 9th Norfolk Regiment. Evacuation of casualties running smoothly.

ADS shelled at 8am, no casualties

ADS visited by Lt Col Collins DSO who brought up motor ambulances. ADMS 6th Division visited A.D.S about 1.30pm. Sudden shelling of A.D.S. at 3.30pm. Major Ferman MC killed instantaneously while going to assistance of Major Fitzgibbon MC CF who was also killed. Two OR’s also killed and two German prisoners killed.

1 O.R. killed and 8 OR’s wounded at various times in forward area. HQ shelled about 4pm. Lt Col Collins wounded and subsequently killed instantaneously. Two ORs killed, 3 OR’s wounded.
