Circumstances of Death
William is listed as being killed in action on 15 Jun 1915. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the 14th, 15th and 16th June are transcribed below. June 14. Quiet day. Work in evening very slight owing to demonstration Bombardment of E [Enemy] lines from 4pm. Enemy shelled D.1. Three casualties. June 15. Work continued on Support Trenches. About 8.30am mines exploding a sap mine below a German gallery, gallery believed destroyed. Miners again went down again too soon, seven of whom then became gassed by after? Gas. Enemy shelled our centre slightly. G.O.C inspected the trenches. Demonstration bombardment in the evening. June 16. A quiet day & very hot. Our trench mortar fired about 6pm. Enemy shelled & were repelled by our own heavies. Work continued on trenches. A considerable amount of firing continued throughout the night. |
