Circumstances of Death
Herbert is listed as dying of wounds on 21 Mar 1918. The 30th Brigade war diary entries for the 20th March 1918 is self-explanatory and transcribed below. 20-3-1918 - Lille Gate, Ypres: The usual harrassing programme was carried out during the night. At 4.56am S.O.S in Lanes? D&E was answered. Other shoots as shown in attached reports. 2nd Lt Tomlinson of 39 Siege Battery was severely wounded on his way up to D29/2 OP. This officer was soon after reported as having died of wounds. |
