From his service number 8393 we can say that Arthur enlisted between 20 Jan 1906 and 7 Jan 1907 when the service #'s 8165 and 8427 were issued. (Source)
Circumstances of Death
Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 11 Nov 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 10th to 12th Nov 1916 are transcribed below. Near Ronssoy - Front Line Trenches 10/11/16: Battalion in front line, same position as on previous day. Near Ronssoy - Front Line Trenches 11/11/16: Battalion in front line, same position as on previous day. About 11pm the Battalion was relieved by the 1st Royal Irish Rifles and relieved the 2nd Bn Rifle Brigade in Brigade Support in Hogs Back Trench. 2/Lt W.D. Lennard wounded. 10 OR joined from base. Hogs Back Trench - Support Line Trenches 12/11/16: Battalion in Brigade support in Hogs Back Trench. Lt. G.H. Carter and 2nd Lt. W.A. Bartman wounded, Lt. Carter afterwards died from wounds same night. |

may have enlisted under a different number or Regiment before being given the number 8393 in 1906 - In 1911 he was awarded the Dehli Durbar medal from the Adjutant General in India.
