Mrs. Field, 6 Chapel Row, Warwick has received letters from officers about the death of her husband C.S.M. Field. Major. A.S. Alabaster writes that C.S.M. Field always impressed him as being a particularly fine soldier. He always did his duty well and was very highly thought of by his officers and company.

Captain Nicholls explains the circumstances of Sergeant-Major Field’s death. He writes: “It appears that two sergeants were examining an old Austrian shell fuse and, imagining it useless, threw it on the ground, when it exploded. Your husband was having his tea in his quarters some five yards away and a piece of the cap entered his side, causing death to be instantaneous. This officer says that the Sergeant-Major was “probably the best known and best liked man in the battalion.
