James is listed as dying of wounds incurred in action. The 1st/7th Battalion war diary for the period 1st to 7th March 1917 is transcribed below. James would have died in on of the 5th, 38th or 48th Casualty Clearing Stations which were based at Bray at that time. Biaches - 1 Mar 1917: B & D Coys relieved A & C Coys in the front line. 7 men wounded by G Bomb in No. 2 Post Biaches - 2-3 Mar 1917: Raid by 2nd Lt J Dick (A Coy) unsuccessful owing to faulty barrage by our artillery who shelled our front line. Pte Philpot killed, 4 other men wounded. 3 men killed and 3 men wounded in No. 2 Post R.F. Coy by shells (doubtful whether British or German). Biaches - 3 Mar 1917: Battn relieved by 1/8 Worcester Regt & proceeded to Camp 56. Relief completed at 10pm. Biaches - 4-7 Mar 1917: Battn moved to Camp 50 exclusively. Working parties 350 men 6.30pm to 12pm at Herbecourt & Flaucourt. |
