Previous Service and Enlistment

Ernest's service number, 5307, was issued at some time between 4 Jan 1899 and 24 Apr 1900 when numbers 4214 and 5384 were issued. He served in South Africa

Circumstances of Death

Ernest died on 3 Sep 1917 when he accidentally drowned in the Canal d'Aire a la Bassee.

The war diary places Ernest and the Royal Horse Guards in a camp at Boeseghem very close to the Canal d'Aire a la Bassee and no mention is made of casualties. A newspaper cutting states that Ernest went in search of a Corporal of his troop and was not seen for 5 days until his body was found in the canal in which he drowned. The diary does not mention any missing men for the whole of August to it has not been possible to identify who Ernest was looking for.
