Circumstances of Death
Sydney is listed as dying of his wounds on 1 Dec 1917 at the 19th Casualty Clearing Station at Duisan. Unfortunately no records survive which tell us on what day Sydney was wounded. We know that there were no casualties on the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th November 1917. The war diary entries for the 29th & 30th Nov and 1st Dec are transcribed below. One point of note is that Sydney was a member of A Coy which may indicate that he was wounded on the 29th or 30th Nov. 29 Nov 1917 Trenches near Monchy-le-Preux: Heavy shelling of our support and reserve lines at intervals during the day. Fine day. Casualties 2 Other Ranks wounded. 30 Nov 1917 Trenches near Monchy-le-Preux: Enemy artillery very active. C Coy relieved A Coy and B Coy relieved D Coy in the front lines. Trenches cleaned up during the day and were erected in front of Support line during the night. Fine day. Casualties 2 Other Ranks killed and 2 other ranks wounded. 1 Dec 1917 Trenches near Monchy-le-Preux: "Enemy shelled periodically during the day. Front line was evacuated at 7pm for Gas Bombardment of enemy's front system by Special Stokes Mortars. Fairly quiet night". Casualties 3 Other Ranks killed and 4 wounded. |
