22 Dec 1915 - Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into Rifle Brigade (Gazette) and attached to RFC (Gazette)

01 Jul 1916 - Observer with 22nd Squadron Royal Flying Corps, carried out much photographic work during the Battle of the Somme.

4 Jul 1917 - Promoted to Lieutenant (Flying Officer) with senority from 21 Mar 1916 (Gazette) (Gazette 2

3 Nov 1917 - He was attached to the 81st Squadron at Scampton, Lincolnshire as an Instructor (Gazette)

Circumstances of Death

Coutenay is listed as being was killed on 3 Nov 1917 in a flying accident. On the day he was flying Avro 504J (pictured below) number B3224, of 81st Squardron at Scampton when he collided in mid-air with Avro 504J B3194 also of 81st Squardron, Scampton which was being flown by Lieutenant Owen Ellis Augustus Allen, R.F.C. of Cambridge and they were both killed. His commanding officer wrote: “He was the best Instructor we had; a very popular officer and a perfect pilot.”

He is buried in Kinfauns Church, Perthshire His ashes were, originally, interred in the family vault. In 1926, they were removed and placed in the church wall behind the tablet in his memory, designed by Lorimer and Matthew.

  • Before going to Sandhurst Courtenay was offered place at Christ Church, Oxford but the war intervened preventing him taking the place
  • Courtenay was a keen horseman and passed the Cavalry School Course at Tidworth, and hunted with the Warwickshire Hounds
  • Courtenay's only brother, Denys Colquhoun Flowerdew Lowson who came up to Christ Church was Lord Mayor of London from 1950-51
    and was made a Baronet.
  • Courtenay's father was a paper manufacturer and a Member of the King’s Bodyguard for Scotland
