Circumstances of Death

Herbert is listed as being killed in action on 4 Feb 1917. The battalion was diary for that day is transcribed below.

Biaches 4/4/1917: Heavily bombarded between 12 (noon) and 5.40pm with three slight lulls - intense bombardment 5.40 - carnage on Front, Support and Stettin Lines and Communication trenches. Raiding parties entered left of centre company (B Coy) at 6.15pm, other parties on right and left stopped by L.G. [Lewis Gun] and rifle fire. S.O.S signals sent up 6.15pm and HQ Communicated with Brigade on telephone just as lines were cut. Centre and left companies moved up supports - found enemy already driven out at 6.25pm.

Casualties: 35 killed, 4 died of wounds, 60 wounded and 14 missing. Herbert was one of those killed.
