Francis is listed as being killed in action on 16th July 1918. The 48 Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery war diary for both the 16th and 17th July are transcribed below as it is possible that Francis was actually killed on the 17th. The CWGC records do not tally with the war diary, two men of the 59th Battery, France and Gunner Hickebottom, were buried at Bienvillers on the 16th, but we did not find any burials for the 59th Bty on 17th (see below). Map Ref [57D].D.27.b.7.8 - 16th: Visibility good. Heavy Arty carried out a special bombardment of Puisieux. 81 S.B. (Siege Battery) fired on MQNFLZ6 200 rounds with plane observations $Y, 92 & 2M ok. Hostile arty replied more vigorously than normal. Map Ref [57D].D.27.b.7.8 - 17th: Visibility fair. Heavy thunderstorm at night. A special strafe of hostile btys took place during the day. 59 S.B. and 81 S.B. taking part. 59 S.B. had a direct hit by 4.2 How (Howitzer) on their forward gun pit, 3 men being killed and 1 wounded. The map reference about can be plotted on a trench map by clicking here. The above reference is a point south of Souastre, France. |
