William is listed as being killed in action on 6th April 1917. The war diary entried for the 5th, 6th and 7th April are transcribed below. Arras - 5th April 1917 - Z day: No hostile shelling worth recording. Operations carried on with good results. X/29 had one adapter bush and one extension frame damaged by shell fire. Y/29 had one bed broken. Arras - 6th April 1917: X day: All battery positions heavily shelled by 5.9", 4.2" and 7.7cm guns. Firing continued whenever possible. X & Y/12 had three guns buried. X/12 had also one extension frame and one traversing plate broken. Arras - 7th April 1917: Q day: No shelling on positions of any consquence to report and operations continued satisfactorily. Casualties to equipment one extension frame damage and one bed broken. END |
