John is listed as dying of his wounds on 8 Jun 1917. It is unclear on which day he was wounded but most likely it was on the 4th June, see below. At this time the Brigade were Headquartered in La Veau near the Messines Ridge. He died at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in nearby Bailleul. The war diary for the period 1st to 8th June 1917 is transcribed below. Le Veau - 1.6.17: Headquarters not in action. 24thy and 72nd Batteries in action near Ploegsteert and attached to the K Group 3rd Australian D.A. A/38 Battery attached to the J Group, 3rd New Zealand Divnl Artly 4.6.17: Batteries heavily shelled. 24th Bty had 3 men wounded and 9 men were admitted to hospital suffering from Gas Poisoning. Lt H.J. Weldon and 2 gunners of the 72nd Battery were killed. A/38 [John's unit] had a gunner killed and 3 men wounded. 5.6.17: 2/Lt L.G. Smith 72nd Battery wounded. END 7.6.17: 3.10am Battle for Messines Ridge. All batteries engaged. Programme attached. Casualties in Brigade 2 killed and 14 wounded. END There are no entried for the period 8th to 16th June. |

- John was a reservist and so had previously served in the Army - This is supported by his medal card
- Before the war he is said to have been a Police Officer in South Africa - we did not find him on the 1911 UK Census
